The Lord Reigns
“Blessed are those whose help is the God of Jacob, whose hope is in the Lord their God. He is the Maker of Heaven and Earth, the sea and everything in them—He remains faithful forever. He upholds the cause of the oppressed and gives food to the hungry. The Lord sets prisoners free, the Lord gives sight to the blind, the Lord lifts those who are bowed down, the Lord loves the righteous. The Lord watches over the foreigner and sustains the fatherless and widow, but He frustrates the ways of the wicked. The Lord reigns forever, your God, O Zion, for all generations. Praise the Lord.” Psalm 146:5-10 NIV
On this Christmas morning, let’s take a moment to ponder over the God that we are celebrating today. This passage describes Him well. We are indeed blessed if our hope is in the Lord our God. Our circumstances may not be pleasant, but we have the assurance that our God is with us, and He will take care of us. We are in good hands. He is the Maker of Heaven and Earth, the seas and everything in them. He made it all and if He made it, He is certainly capable of taking care of it and sustaining it. He set the Earth on its axis. He put it at the exact distance from the sun and made it rotate with the precise timing necessary to sustain life for us. He created seasons so that crops could grow and provide the nutrients we would need to live. He created the exact balance of oxygen and carbon dioxide necessary. He created ecosystems that function perfectly. He created the human body to live and breathe and work and grow. We are fearfully and wonderfully made. He is the master architect of it all and He will sustain it for as long as He has planned. He has always been faithful and will be faithful forever.
In addition to creating and sustaining it, He is also intimately involved in His creation. He does not watch it from afar and intervene when He must. He cares for us personally and continually. He gives food to the hungry and He cares for the poor. He protects the fatherless and the widows. He gives sight to the blind and defends the oppressed. He releases people from the prison of sin that has bound them, and He deals with the wicked. This is the God we love and serve. We love because He first loved us. He gave us life and He blesses us beyond what we can even fathom. We are His children, and He is our loving Father. Let us celebrate the birth of our Savior today. O come let us adore Him, Christ the Lord!
